If We Were Birds

Projection Mapping for The Play

I have collaborated with faculty in the Dramatic Arts Department, creating motion media animations for the Connecticut Repertory Theatre’s play, If We Were Birds, as a Projection Mapping Designer. Not only did I direct concepts, style, and animation, but I also guided my students to help develop animations for the plays.

If We Were Birds is a drama written by Erin Shields, a retelling of one of Ovid’s Metamorphoses stories. The war in Athens is over. Yet, even in the aftermath, the horrors continue as King Tereus assaults his sister-in-law Philomela in an act of passion. A story of tragedy, empowerment, and triumph, Philomela and many female victims of the war use their experiences a platform to speak out, an idea that led If We Were Birds to win the 2010 Dora Mavor Moore Award for “Outstanding New Play.” Philomela’s and the other women’s stories strike a contemporary chord as a great number of women share their stories and speak for women’s rights.
